Nancy F., 2021
Back-sleepers will love the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss. This all-latex mattress is available in a 9-, 10-, and 12-inch model and we recommend the two deeper sizes in a medium-firm for heavier or taller adult back-sleepers. The PlushBeds factory is GOTS certified and the company makes all mattresses to order. The mattresses are also GreenGuard Gold and Eco Institut certified, featuring only organic, non-toxic materials.
In the 12-inch build, the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss comprises:
- GOTS organic cotton cover with zipper
- GOTS organic British wool flame barrier
- GOTS organic cotton underlay to prevent the wool from bunching
- 3-inch Talalay latex comfort layer
- 3-inch Arpico latex core for lumbar support
- 6-inch Arpico latex core
In the 9-inch and 10-inch models, there’s just one 6-inch Arpico latex layer. The 9-inch mattress has a 2-inch Talalay latex later instead of a 3-inch layer. PlushBeds typically recommends the following builds based on body weight:
Adult weight | Recommended mattress height |
---|---|
Up to 225 lb. | 9-inch |
225-250 lb. | 10-inch |
275 lb. or more. | 12-inch |
The Botanical Bliss is made entirely of organic and non-toxic materials. It is free of polyfoam, chemical flame retardants and fiberglass, and other synthetic materials, glues, and adhesives. Members of the LeafScore team have used the Botanical Bliss for years and can vouch that it doesn’t come with the off-gassing “new mattress smell” so many of our readers are trying to avoid.
The medium Botanical Bliss is likely too soft for most back-sleepers but may be a good compromise for adults who weigh 130 lb. or less and also sleep on their side.

I have been using this mattress for the last 2 years and I still congratulate myself for making a great purchase. I am a side sleeper and I used to have back problems. My partner is a back sleeper, tall and relatively heavy. The mattress is extremely comfortable for both, has the right balance of support and softness, and does not transfer movements from one person to another.
Andra C., 2022

Top to bottom, the all-latex Savvy Rest Serenity comprises:
- Organic cotton casing with brass zipper
- Organic wool batting (quilted to prevent bunching)
- Three 3-inch layers of natural latex.
Lighter to average weight back-sleepers will enjoy the gentle contouring and robust underlying support available with the Serenity mattress, although this will depend on which latex layers you choose. The mattress arrived on schedule in a box that was manageable for me to maneuver into the house and unpack (Just so you know—it’s a standard-size mattress, and I’m a 110-lb. woman in her 60’s). It was a bit challenging to get it up onto the bed, but leverage is your friend, and it only took a few minutes to work it into position and remove the final layer of plastic wrap.
Brunnhilde, 2019
Avocado’s signature Green mattress is available with or without a Pillow-Top. For most adult back-sleepers, we recommend the Standard 11-inch Avocado Green without the Pillow-Top. This ready-made medium-firm mattress rates around 7/10 for firmness and is one of just a handful of mattresses with Made Safe certification as non-toxic
The Avocado Green mattress is a latex hybrid with far more innerspring coils than most mattresses in this price range. It features up to 1,414 individually wrapped 8-inch innerspring coils and is designed with added coils at the edges for good perimeter support.
Top to bottom, the Avocado Green comprises:
- GOTS certified organic cotton encasement
- GOTS certified organic wool flame barrier
- 2-inch comfort layer of Dunlop latex (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft)
- 8-inch individually wrapped pocket coil unit
- 1-inch layer of Dunlop latex (D65) in the base

With the Pillow-Top model, Avocado adds an extra 2-inch layer of Dunlop latex (D65) on top.

- No handles on the sides
- Can’t customize comfort level
- Less transparency on materials and construction (but owned by Naturepedic, who we trust!)
This is a good mattress, with a bit of bounce. It sleeps much cooler than memory foam. The edges aren’t as structured as I would have hoped, so you lose a couple of inches all around, but overall it’s a good, solid mattress. Better for back sleeping, but with a[topper] it likely would work well for side sleepers.
Adriane C., 2023
Happsy was founded by Naturepedic, which is one of our favorite eco-friendly, non-toxic mattress companies. So, while Happsy looks new to the game, it has a huge head start, thanks to Naturepedic’s know-how and existing supply chains. This is how it can offer an incredibly affordable mattress that is heavily certified and made with quality materials. In fact, Happsy is one of just a handful of companies with the coveted Made Safe certification as non-toxic.
Happsy also keeps costs low by offering just one mattress in a single firmness. This means the Happsy mattress won’t work for everyone. Indeed, it’s usually a terrible choice for side-sleepers and a poor fit for heavier adults needing deeper support and cushioning.
If you’re a younger, pain-free back-sleeper in the market for a firmer mattress at an affordable price, the Happsy is a fantastic choice.
The Happsy mattress is zippered in an organic cotton casement, but don’t let that trick you into thinking you can customize the layers. This mattress is a ready-made 10-inch design and the zipper is purely for ease of recycling. Arguably, it also makes the mattress cheaper to build and a little less durable than mattresses with fully stitched outer casings.
Spindle Mattress [Staff Tested]

Our new mattress has a great balance of both give and support. We are both back and side sleepers. Overall this Spindle mattress has improved the quality of our lives.
Zachary N., 2022
Spindle offers a 10-inch organic latex mattress with a layered and customizable design. This mattress works best for lighter adults, especially back-sleepers and some side-sleepers. For adults weighing 230 lb. or more, the mattress likely won’t offer deep or firm enough support to maintain proper spinal alignment and relieve pressure on joints. Indeed, Spindle doesn’t recommend its mattress for adults with a BMI above 31.
Note that Spindle only offers Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, and King sizes, with no Cali King or split size options.
Spindle makes its mattress using:
- GOLS certified organic latex – three layers, in firm, medium, or soft (at your choosing)
- GOTS certified organic cotton – for the sleep surface (circular knit), side and bottom fabric (cotton canvas)
- GOTS certified organic wool – as a flame barrier around the mattress.
Spindle also uses a metal zipper for the cotton encasement, polyester thread for stitching, and Kevlar tape to seal seams vulnerable to flames. These components all satisfy GOTS rules and make up less than 0.1% and 0.001% of the mattress for polyester and Kevlar, respectively.
Spindle’s latex is exclusively Dunlop latex from Sri Lanka. It has a springiness of around 4/10, according to the company. The latex comes in three firmness levels:
- Soft: 20 – 23 ILD and D65 (kg/m3)
- Medium: 26 – 29 ILD and D75
- Firm: 34 – 37 ILD and D85.
A ready-made Spindle mattress has a layer of each firmness top to bottom. You can also customize your mattress with different layers, such as a soft-medium-medium, or soft-firm-firm, for example.

Reviews
Jessica H., 2021
I normally suffer from back pain but this bed has helped so much. It is perfect for both me and my husband. I am a side and back sleeper while he sleeps on his back and stomach mostly! Our dog also loves it! We love that it is eco friendly as well!
Back-sleepers on the lighter side will likely love the Birch Natural latex hybrid mattress. This affordable, eco-friendly mattress is GOTS and GreenGuard Gold certified and made in the U.S. It lacks the more robust full perimeter edging of the Birch Luxe Natural and the zoned lumbar support, but is a more affordable option for back-sleepers under 200 lb. who like a firmer mattress and don’t have existing back pain or joint problems.
Top to bottom, the Birch Natural comprises:
- GOTS certified organic cotton cover
- GOTS certified organic wool comfort layer
- GOTS certified organic wool flame barrier
- Eco Institut certified Talalay latex
- Pocket coil layer
- Another layer of wool
- Organic cotton cover.
The wool comes from New Zealand from free-range sheep raised to the standards of the PGC Wrightson Wool Integrity Program, with full transparency through the wool supply chain and guaranteed ethical conditions for farming.
The Talalay latex is responsibly sourced according to Eco Institut standard, although Birch’s certificate was out of date by two months when I checked in March, 2023. Birch uses extra coils for sturdier edge support on the two long sides of this mattress. The Luxe has full perimeter edge support. There are up to 1,000 coils in the Birch Natural mattress, which is less than the Avocado Green and the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss.
This mattress offers great breathability, support for temperature regulation, moisture-wicking, and good bounce and spring for sex.
While Birch Living uses eco-friendly materials, the company is a little inconsistent with its certifications and wholesale approach to sustainability. The company used to donate to the National Forests Foundation but doesn’t appear to have any active programs like this currently. There’s also a ‘carbon offsets’ logo lurking on the site but no indication as to what this means. The company’s certificates are also hit and miss, with some missing, one out of date, and contradictory information on which materials hold which certificate. Why list Birch Living, then, given these signs that point a little bit to greenwashing? Because I contacted the company and found it extremely responsive and helpful. Staff provided me with the missing certificates and information and it’s clear that the confusion is mostly due to a slightly outdated website and web copy. The eco credentials of Birch Living are robust and the mattresses seem to offer excellent value for money.
Birch Luxe Natural Mattress

There is nothing I don’t love about my mattress. I sleep on my back and side mostly and it’s comfortable both ways. It doesn’t have any weird, chemical smells and is excellent quality. I would highly recommend the Birch Lux!
Chelsea L., 2023
You’ll pay about $500 more for the Birch Luxe Natural mattress versus the Natural but it’s worth it if you’re a heavier adult or have existing back or joint pain. The Luxe boasts zoned support and better edging, and extra layers of cashmere and wool to enhance thermoregulation, breathability, and moisture-wicking.
Like the Natural, the Birch Luxe Natural is a hybrid latex mattress featuring Talalay latex with innerspring coil support. There’s no poly-foam, chemical flame retardants, or synthetic materials in the Luxe. Instead, you’ll find the following materials top to bottom:
- A quilted Euro-Top – GOTS certified organic cotton and organic wool as a flame barrier
- Organic cashmere and wool
- More organic wool
- More organic wool
- Talalay latex
- Pocket coils with zoned support at the hips and shoulders
- Organic wool flame barrier
- Organic cotton canvas cover.
Birch uses extra coils at all four sides for full edge support, though there are still fewer than 1,000 coils in the mattress overall.
FAQs
Back-sleepers tend to distribute their body weight fairly evenly across the surface of a mattress. However, heavier adults or those with larger hips may find that they sink into the mattress at the lower back. Without the right kind of support in this area, this can put the spine out of alignment, lead to strain on the back, and result in back pain and stiffness as well as restless sleep.
Back-sleepers do tend to snore more and are also more at risk of sleep apnea. Sleeping on your side can help reduce snoring and sleep apnea but may require a more plush mattress with deeper support. Sleeping on your stomach may also help decrease snoring and sleep apnea risks but can lead to a sore neck and back without the proper mattress and pillow set-up.
Back-sleepers tend to do best with a medium-firm mattress that offers additional support in the lumbar (lower back) region. This helps to prevent too much sinkage into the mattress at the hips, which can put the spine out of alignment. Back-sleepers don’t typically need extra support at the shoulders, however, unlike side-sleepers where hip and shoulder zoning is ideal.
Back-sleepers often find latex hybrid mattresses a great fit for their needs. These mattresses are typically supportive and responsive, providing good cushioning without too much sinkage in the hip area.
