The Botanical Bliss is a top pick across the board, including for couples. This layered all-latex design offers customization on each side and is available in a 9-, 10-, and 12-inch build, meaning it’s well suited for adults of all weights and sizes. You can reconfigure this zippered mattress as needed, even replacing layers years after initial purchase.
For couples with at least one heavier or taller adult, we recommend the 12-inch design with a medium-firm build on one side. For lighter couples, the 9-inch or 10-inch builds may suffice. Heavier adults will do best on a medium-firm set-up, while lighter adults will usually do best on a medium, though some lighter stomach sleepers may prefer the medium-firm.
With the right configuration, the Botanical Bliss offers excellent pressure relief and firm underlying support for proper spinal posture.
The PlushBeds factory is GOTS certified and the company makes all mattresses to order. The mattresses are also GreenGuard Gold and Eco Institut certified, featuring only organic, non-toxic materials.
What is the Plushbed’s Botanical Bliss made of?
In the 12-inch build, the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss comprises:
- GOTS organic cotton cover with zipper
- GOTS organic British wool flame barrier
- GOTS organic cotton underlay to prevent the wool from bunching
- 3-inch Talalay latex comfort layer
- 3-inch Arpico latex core for lumbar support
- 6-inch Arpico latex core
The 9-inch and 10-inch models have the 6-inch Arpico latex layer only, with just a 2-inch layer of Talalay instead of the 3-inch layer in the 9-inch mattress.
PlushBeds typically recommends the following builds based on body weight:
Adult weight | Recommended mattress height |
---|---|
Up to 225 lb. | 9-inch |
225-250 lb. | 10-inch |
275 lb. or more. | 12-inch |
How it performs
The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss combines airier, softer Talalay latex with ultra-dense Arpico latex cores to create a comfortable mattress with a soft-top feel backed by firm underlying support for spinal posture. Our team members have used these mattresses for years and have been satisfied with the quality. You and your sleep partner can choose between a medium or medium-firm build to meet your specific sleep needs. And if those sleep needs (or your sleep partner) change in the future, you can switch layers around or buy replacement layers to reconfigure the mattress.
PlushBeds offers a 100-night comfort guarantee and free layer exchange.
Talalay latex is buoyant, responsive, and breathable, supporting good temperature regulation and ease of movement across the bed’s surface. It’s also got a little more elasticity than Dunlop latex, which can support active sex.
Arpico latex is an ultra-dense type of latex that is resistant to sagging and indentation. This is one reason why the Botanical Bliss is a top choice for larger couples.
We talk more about our experience with the Botanical Bliss here.
Downsides
As an all-latex mattress you assemble at home, the Botanical Bliss can be a bit of a struggle to set up. PlushBeds doesn’t offer a white glove delivery service, so be ready to call in friends, family, neighbors, or paid helpers to get those layers into place.
In its favor, the Botanical Bliss has up to six robust handles, which makes it much easier to move and lift once set up. Most other home-assembly latex layered mattresses don’t come with handles, oddly.
Another quirk of all-latex mattresses is a relative lack of edge support, compared to hybrid mattresses with reinforcement at the sides or perimeter. Thanks to the Arpico latex, though, the Botanical Bliss offers a little more edge support than softer core mattresses and much more than memory foam or polyfoam.
Packaging and shipping
The Botanical Bliss ships in three, four, or more boxes depending on which size and design you choose. Each layer comes in plastic wrap, which you may be able to recycle in some places in the U.S. Here’s hoping PlushBeds follows Avocado’s lead and switches some of the plastic to paper soon!
Note that while PlushBeds ships mattresses for free in the contiguous U.S., there’s no white glove delivery option. That means you’ll have to get the mattress inside and set it up yourself. If you anticipate this being a struggle, arrange for friends, family, or paid helpers to be on hand at the time of delivery.
Most Botanical Bliss mattresses ship within 7-9 business days as they’re made to order. Custom or split designs take twice as long typically.

I love my serenity latex mattress! It provides similar comfort to a memory foam but surpasses memory foam in that it provides excellent support! No more sinking into the bed and getting backaches! I’m so happy with the purchase and it supports a local Virginia / made in the USA small business!
Flora, 2022
The Savvy Rest Serenity mattress is a 10-inch, all-latex, layered design that couples can customize on each side. It is made in the U.S. in a certified GOTS factory and is also available in custom dimensions and shapes!
Savvy Rest is a B Corp that makes VOC-free, non-toxic, sustainable mattresses for adults, children, and infants. The company is also employee-owned and has a good reputation for customer satisfaction and happy staff. It has a Safe Sleep Pillows Program that donates new pillows to domestic violence shelters across the U.S. and it regularly donates to American Forests and other environmental initiatives.
The one major downside of this company is that it doesn’t offer refunds if a mattress doesn’t work for you. The one exception is the Serenity mattress, which is eligible for a 90-day Latex Exchange. This allows you to switch a layer for a different firmness or type of latex to reconfigure the mattress to better meet your needs. Note that if you upgrade from Dunlop to Talalay latex you have to pay shipping costs and a fee.
What’s materials are in Savvy Rest mattresses?
The Savvy Rest Serenity mattress comprises:
- Organic cotton casing with brass zipper
- Organic wool batting (quilted to prevent bunching)
- Three 3-inch layers of natural latex (Dunlop or Talalay) in soft, medium, and firm.
With most mattress companies, you can only choose between either Dunlop or Talalay latex in different firmness. With Savvy Rest, you get twice the number of options because you can choose between three firmness levels in the two types of latex.
Savvy Rest’s Dunlop latex is certified organic to USDA standards and by GOLS. The Talalay latex is Cradle to Cradle Gold certified. The GOTS wool and GOTS organic cotton are then used to make a fully GOTS certified mattress at the Savvy Rest GOTS certified factory.
There are no chemical flame retardants, glues, or synthetic materials in the Serenity from Savvy Rest.
How it performs
The Serenity offers breathability, thermoregulation, and moisture-wicking for a comfortable sleep. The mattresses are durably built with quality materials and expert craftsmanship.
You can customize the Serenity across all three latex layers and Savvy Rest now offers a mattress design tool to help you get started. Choose between Dunlop and Talalay latex in soft, medium, and firm to make the perfect mattress for your sleep needs and your partner’s.
Some of the most popular combinations include:
Popular choice | Couples with different sleep needs | Smaller adults and those with chronic pain | |
---|---|---|---|
Top | Soft Dunlop | Soft Talalay | Soft Talalay |
Middle | Medium Dunlop | Soft/Medium Dunlop | Soft/Medium Talalay |
Bottom | Firm Dunlop | Medium/Firm Dunlop | Firm Dunlop |
Benefits | Pressure relief, soft top layer, stable spine support, adaptable configuration (switch top two layers for a firmer feel) | One soft side with more pressure relief for lighter bodies, one firmer side with robust underlying spine support | A bed (on the left) that hugs you! A bed (on the right) that helps with pressure relief and postural support |
Best for | Guest beds, growing children, many body types | Couples with one light and one heavier partner, larger people with back pain | Petite to average people on the left/average to heavier people on the right, people with shoulder or hip stiffness |
Thanks to the different latex options, the Serenity is a great choice whether you sleep on your stomach, back, or side, or a combination of the three. And because you can choose a build from very soft (plush) to very firm, this mattress works for almost all sleepers. The one exception would be very large adult side-sleepers, who may find that the 10-inch profile isn’t sufficient to prevent the mattress bottoming out (where you can feel the bed base or slats beneath).
Savvy Rest only recommends using the Serenity on a rigid, slatted foundation or platform bed, not for a Murphy or adjustable bed.
We like that the Serenity has a sturdy organic cotton casing with strong brass zipper, making the somewhat challenging job of home mattress assembly a little easier. Note, too, that the Dunlop latex has a firmer and softer side to each layer. While the instructions say to position the Dunlop layers with the smaller holes facing up, Savvy Rest also suggests flipping this upside down (with the larger holes facing up) to make your mattress a bit firmer. This adds to the wealth of customization options available with the Serenity.
Downsides
The main downsides of the Serenity are the need for home assembly, the heaviness of each layer, lack of handles, and the poor return policy.
Savvy Rest won’t allow returns unless there’s a manufacturing defect. This is to avoid them needing to spray the mattresses to sanitize for resale. Given that other mattress makers allow returns and then donate or recycle the mattresses, this seems churlish.
Packaging and shipping
The Serenity ships free in three boxes. Savvy Rest labels each box and each piece for easy assembly. Savvy Rest offers white glove delivery and mattress set-up. If you have the budget for it, this is a really convenient service, especially for older couples and anyone who may otherwise struggle to move large layers of latex into place.
During the 90-day layer exchange period, you can switch layers for free, although you pay shipping to return the old and receive the new layer. Note, too, that there’s a fee to upgrade from Dunlop to Talalay (but no credit if you go the other way). Shipping costs depend on the layer size, i.e., you’ll pay more for King than Twin.

it took some trial and error and at first I was nervous I wasn’t going to love it. Again Darlie John patiently helped me to adjust my layers and sent me replacements until the firmness was correct. Once we got it right though, it was heaven on earth! Both my husband and I have completely alleviated the back discomfort we bought it to fix, I sleep like an absolute rock and getting into bed is such a treat. One word of caution through, it’ll ruin you for good! You’ll never want to leave home because no bed compares. Thanks Obasan, it’s love!
Jenna N., 2022
Obasan has been making mattresses for decades and knows exactly how to configure each side to meet a couple’s individual needs. This is the ultimate luxury in all-latex mattresses, with exemplary customer service and handmade, sustainable mattresses crafted in Ottawa in a carbon-neutral workshop.
With Obasan, you and your sleep partner get to choose the firmness of each layer, with extra zoning options for the middle layer to support hips and shoulders as needed. This kind of zoned support is only usually available with innerspring hybrid mattresses.T
Obasan mattresses are another home-assembly option. This means more work at set-up but also more flexibility to reconfigure and replace layers as needed.
What’s in it?
There are two mattress options from Obasan: the Classic, featuring eight inches of latex and a 10-inch profile overall, and the Deluxe, featuring 10 inches of latex for a 13-inch profile.
For heavier couples, the deeper Deluxe model will offer the best support. Lighter couples may find the Classic (No.1) sufficient though.
Top to bottom, the Deluxe comprises:
- Organic cotton Jersey fabric quilted cover with zipper
- Organic Topper comprising:
- 1-inch soft latex and 1-inch needle punched wool on both sides
- 2-inch top layer of soft latex
- 4-inch customizable core with head-to-toe zoning
- 4-inch customizable base layer of medium or firm latex.
The Classic doesn’t have the same topper (you get a Eurotop with wool and cotton) and has two 3-inch latex core and base layers instead.
Obasan’s online design tool offers two suggestions based on your information, one for the Deluxe and one for the Classic. Most designs, regardless of your sleep style and body weight or type, feature soft Talalay latex on top. You can ask for a different firmness, though, if you’re set on a particular design.
An Obasan mattress is free of glues or adhesives, and there’s no poly-foam, VOCs, flame retardants, or synthetic materials in these all-organic, all-natural luxury products.
How it performs
If you or your partner always seems to need to compromise comfort when buying a mattress, you’ll both love Obasan. Each side can be perfectly tailored to different needs and Obasan is great for all sleep positions, older and younger folks, and heavier and lighter couples. It is also easy to reconfigure your mattress if sleep needs change.
The materials are excellent quality and the customer service is incredible. Obasan is truly committed to helping you and your partner find a good fit for your sleep style.
Overall, a well-designed Obasan mattress offers impressive pressure relief and comfort with the essential core support for good spinal alignment, regardless of body type, weight, and sleep style. The zoned latex mid-layer is rare for all-latex builds and offers additional support for hips and shoulders. This makes the Obasan a fantastic choice for heavier side-sleepers and those who are hip-heavy or shoulder-heavy and dread sinking into a mattress in these areas.
If you’re a hot sleeper, the Deluxe pillow top makes for a very breathable surface that supports temperature regulation and helps wick away moisture. The wool in the topper also reduces motion transfer and firms up the surface for easier movement and a little more edge support.
Downsides
Cost is the major downside of the Obasan. Expect to pay a luxury price for a luxury mattress perfectly tailored to meet both sleep partners’ sleep needs. Expect to put in a little effort and time too to get your mattress perfectly configured. This may mean switching layers around or replacing layers for a different firmness. For couples where an off-the-rack mattress hasn’t worked well for both or either partner, Obasan is a great choice.
The second major disadvantage of the Obasan mattress is that the company doesn’t offer refunds unless there’s a manufacturing defect. This is because each mattress is tailored to meet your specific sleep needs. The good news is that Obasan will work hard to make sure you love your mattress. This includes that free one-time comfort exchange and ongoing support even years after initial purchase, should your sleep needs change.
Packaging and shipping
Obasan vacuum seals and wraps its mattress pieces in plastic and ships them in branded cardboard boxes. It is working on more eco-friendly packaging but hasn’t yet found a solution that can safely hold compressed latex.
Because they’re built to order, an Obasan mattress for couples will arrive around two weeks after purchase. Shipping is free on orders above $400.

The Savvy Rest Serenity Spring mattress is basically an innerspring version of its customizable all-latex Serenity mattress. This is, by far, the most customizable latex hybrid mattress on the market. Not only can you choose your top layer of latex, you can also choose the firmness of the coils below.
With the Serenity Spring, couples get incredible scope to configure their mattress to meet their needs. And thanks to the individually wrapped pocket coils, there’s very little motion transfer with the Serenity Spring. Serene indeed!
What’s in it?
The Serenity Spring comprises:
- GOTS certified organic cotton cover
- GOTS certified organic wool batting, quilted to prevent bunching
- 3-inch layer of Talalay or Dunlop latex in soft, medium, or firm, customizable on both sides
- 8-inch pocket coil layer, customizable in firm or plush and on both sides.
The pocket coils are individually wrapped in PLA (a plant-derived polymer), then heat-sealed together. This means the mattress offers inch-by-inch support for superior pressure relief and spinal alignment and minimal motion transfer.
There are no chemical flame retardants or other synthetic chemicals in the Serenity Spring, and the coils are made of recycled steel.
The Dunlop latex is GOLS certified and the Talalay latex is Cradle to Cradle Gold certified for health, water stewardship, social fairness, and material reuse. It is also sourced from rubber tree plantations that are sustainable.
How it performs
The Serenity Spring is a rare mattress that lets you choose both your top latex comfort layer and between Plush and Firm pocket coils for the core support layer. With most hybrid mattresses, the pocket coil layer comes as is, with no choice of firmness. This means that while many latex hybrid mattresses work for the majority of folks, some heavier or lighter adults find the standard build too firm or too soft still.
Unlike most hybrid latex mattresses, you can also reconfigure the Serenity Spring after initial purchase. The zippered home assembly design means you can switch out the comfort layer(s) for a different firmness using Savvy Rest’s 90-day latex exchange.
The other unusual thing about the Serenity Spring is that you can choose a split design where you and your partner get to choose different types of coils. If you’re lighter and a side-sleeper, for instance, you might want to team Plush coils with soft Talalay latex. A heavier partner may prefer Firm coils with a medium or soft Dunlop.
The 12-inch Serenity Spring is deep enough to meet the needs of larger bodies in terms of both pressure relief and robust core support. It’s also a touch more breathable than the all-latex mattresses, thanks to those airier pocket coils.
Overall, the Serenity Spring offers gentle contouring and responsive support. Couples will enjoy the slight bounce for sex, but the pocket coils minimize partner sleep disruption.
The Serenity Spring should only be used on rigid or slatted foundations or platform beds. If slats are more than two inches apart, Savvy Rest requires a bed rug under the mattress, otherwise you’ll void your 20-year warranty.
Downsides
The only real downside to the Serenity Spring is that you can’t return it for a full refund unless there’s a manufacturing defect. With so much customization, though, it’s highly likely you’ll work out a configuration that meets everyone’s needs.
One other downside is the lack of handles on the Serenity Spring. Sure, you can disassemble the mattress and choose split layers to make it easier to move, but if you’re just wanting to easily lift or rotate the mattress, handles are, well, handy.
Packaging and shipping
Savvy Rest ships the Serenity Spring for free in three or four boxes, depending on size. It offers instructional videos to guide set-up and carefully labels every box and piece for convenience.
If you need to exchange layers, you pay a shipping fee and, where applicable, an upgrade fee to switch Dunlop to Talalay latex.
Savvy Rest also offers white glove delivery and mattress set-up, which is a great idea for older couples, anyone with mobility challenges, or just for added convenience if you’d rather not heft around layers of latex.

My fiance and I searched for months for a bed and could never agree on comfort levels. We also, through our research, found that the levels of chemicals in mattresses today are pretty astounding, even if they have certain certifications for cleanliness. When he told me about Naturepedic, I was definitely skeptical that a mattress prioritizing health would also be comfortable. I thought natural latex would be too firm for my taste and just didn’t think I’d like it. We went to a showroom to check them out, and I changed my mind quickly after laying on the EOS classic. The price is hefty, but when you think about the fact that this can be a forever mattress (while changing components as needed), can change the components when your comfort needs change, and that it is truly safe to spend 8 hours a day on, it’s totally worth it.
Emily, 2022
My husband now sleeps through the night and is very happy with the Extra Firm. It was too hard for me and Naturepedic immediately switched out my side to something softer, at no charge, and it’s great.
Andrea, 2022
Naturepedic’s EOS mattress offers a plethora of options, with something to suit every couple. Vegans can choose the wool-free EOS Trilux option. Latex allergy sufferers can go latex-free with an all-coil design (plus wool and cotton). And heavier couples can comfortably rest on a luxurious 12-inch or 15-inch deep mattress that offers all the support needed for good sleep.
Both sides of the EOS are customizable for firmness. Depending on your design, you can also switch out layers, even years later, if and when sleep needs change.
Naturepedic is a family-owned, Ohio-based business. It began by making non-toxic crib mattresses and long ago expanded to offer non-toxic, organic mattresses for the whole family.
What’s in the Naturepedic EOS mattress?
The exact design of your Naturepedic EOS will depend on your chosen options. Typically, the EOS comprises:
- GOTS certified organic cotton quilt – cotton grown in the U.S.
- Organic wool batting plus polylactic acid (PLA) comfort layer made from non-GMO sugarcane (for moisture-wicking)
- 3-inch comfort layer of GOLS certified organic latex
- 8-inch layer of individually wrapped steel coils
- Organic cotton batting
- Organic cotton cover with solid brass zipper.
If you choose the Pillow-Top EOS, you get an extra 3-inch comfort layer of GOLS latex that slides into the attached compartment in the cover. If you choose the vegan version, you get a 9-inch mattress without the wool batting, just with more cotton in its place. The latex-free version has two separate coil units: one 3-inch comfort coil unit and an 8-inch coil unit. As with the standard EOS, you can choose the firmness of the coils, though the latex-free build is only available from Firm to Plush (the EOS is available up to Extra Firm).
The EOS coil contour layer is made in-house by Naturepedic and has a fully reinforced perimeter. It comprises individually wrapped steel coils with no glues or adhesives.
Sizes Queen and up have a split design which allows couples to customize both sides. This also makes the layers easier to move and switch out.
How it performs
The EOS from Naturepedic comes in so many different configurations that performance depends on your choices. Get it right and it’s a dream. Get it wrong and… you can reconfigure it! Win-win!
With the Classic and Pillow-Top, you can choose between extra-firm, firm, cushion-firm, medium, and plush. If you’re a couple where one or both of you weigh more than 230 lb., choose firm or extra-firm, regardless of your sleep style. If you’re a heavier stomach-sleeper, the extra-firm will offer the right balance of support and comfort. Note, too, that the plush builds paired with more body weight can make it harder to move around, which can also make intimacy more of a challenge.
Lighter couples do best with medium or plush. The vegan EOS 9-inch also works for lighter couples, though heavier adults will want a minimum 10-inch build to avoid bottoming out.
In general, the EOS offers excellent pressure relief and core support for spinal posture. The coils provide excellent edge support on all sides and enhance breathability while isolating motion to prevent partner sleep disruption.
If your first configuration doesn’t feel right, contact Naturepedic. You can exchange comfort layers for free within your 100-day sleep trial, with prepaid shipping. For adjustments after the 100-day window, you can buy new layers to meet changing sleep needs.
Downsides
We wish the Naturepedic EOS had handles! This seems a common complaint from customers, which isn’t surprising as this is a heavy mattress once put together. After chatting with Naturepedic customer service, I suspect there may be plans (unofficially) to include handles sometime soon. If you love the look of the EOS but want handles, tell the company.
We would also like to see Naturepedic switch out some of its plastic wrap for paper, like Avocado has done. The EOS arrives in an unsightly amount of plastic that is hard or impossible for most customers to recycle in the U.S.
Packaging and shipping
The EOS ships for free and each box and each piece is well labelled. Make sure you have all your boxes before beginning assembly; larger sizes can ship in four boxes or more and boxes may arrive on different days.
Look for the box that says ‘Open this box first’. This is the mattress encasement, which you’ll want to lay out on your bed to get started. Watch the Naturepedic videos before you begin. This will help you set up your mattress faster and more easily, and minimize the risk of damaging any of the pieces.
Unlike PlushBeds, Naturepedic also offers white glove delivery. If you think you’ll struggle with set-up or just want someone else to do it, the cost is well worth it. Naturepedic can also remove your old mattress.

I have been using this mattress for the last 2 years and I still congratulate myself for making a great purchase. I am a side sleeper and I used to have back problems. My partner is a back sleeper, tall and relatively heavy. The mattress is extremely comfortable for both, has the right balance of support and softness, and does not transfer movements from one person to another. It has excellent temperature and humidity regulation – latex does not feel hot, unlike the memory foam I had used before, plus it is natural). The quality and build are both excellent, we will be enjoying this mattress for a few good years.

For couples looking for a slightly firmer, ready-made mattress-in-a-box, the Luxury Bliss is a top choice. This latex hybrid mattress has a high number of individually wrapped pocket coils and an organic latex comfort layer. It is available in medium and medium-firm, and you can choose a split size for custom comfort for you and your partner. This 12-inch mattress can support up to 600 lb. in combined bodyweight, making it a great choice for heavier couples.
PlushBeds offers a lifetime warranty and the Luxury Bliss mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial, so you can try it risk-free.
What’s in it?
The Luxury Bliss is a latex hybrid mattress comprising:
- GOTS cotton encasement
- GOTS certified Joma wool from New Zealand as a flame barrier
- 3-inch soft Talalay latex
- 8-inch pocket coil layer
- 1-inch base layer of GOTS wool and cotton.
The Luxury Bliss is zoned to provide excellent lower back support, thanks to individually fabric-wrapped coils. There are up to 1,283 steel coils in each mattress (1,057 in the Queen size), and PlushBeds uses more coils with a larger (sturdier) gauge at the edges. This means the full perimeter is reinforced for better edge support, even for heavier folks.
How it performs
The Luxury Bliss has a smart hybrid latex design, high coil count, zoned support, and quality materials. This makes for excellent pressure relief, motion isolation, breathability, and temperature regulation. You can also use this ready-assembled mattress on adjustable bases and Murphy beds.
Couples can choose between medium-firm (8/10) and medium (5.5/10) on each side, making this an excellent mattress for back sleepers of different builds. Lighter combination side-sleepers may also enjoy the Luxury Bliss in the medium firmness.
We love that PlushBeds includes up to six sturdy handles on this mattress, making it much easier to move than the Serenity Spring. It also comes with the PlushBeds lifetime warranty and 100-night sleep trial, during which you can exchange or return the mattress.
Downsides
As much as we love the Luxury Bliss, the Serenity Spring wins top marks from us because it is much more customizable. For couples with really different sleep needs and body types, the Luxury Bliss may prove too firm for one partner. And you can’t reconfigure the Luxury Bliss by switching out the top layer or even the pocket coils at a later date or during the sleep trial. The upside, of course, is that the Luxury Bliss comes ready assembled, so you don’t have to wrestle giant latex layers into place.
Price is another downside of the Luxury Bliss. This mattress costs quite a bit more than the Avocado Green, though it is deeper and more customizable.
Packaging and shipping
PlushBeds ships the Luxury Bliss in a vacuum seal plastic bag and plastic wrap with a PlushBeds cardboard box. Every mattress is made to order in the PlushBeds GOTS certified factory in California. Expect your mattress to ship (for free in the contiguous U.S.) within 7-18 days (custom and split sizes take the longest time to ship).
PlushBeds doesn’t have a white glove delivery service or mattress removal.

I tend to sleep hot and my husband normal – and it’s the perfect temperature for both of us. I am a smaller than average athlete and a side sleeper. I prefer a medium support my husband is heavier and prefers a firmer. We chose the pillow top to add a touch more softness to the medium firm mattress and it is perfect for both of us.

The Avocado Green is a good choice for adult couples, especially older adults, who sleep on their back or otherwise prefer a medium-firm mattress (7/10) and need zoned lumbar support. This mattress is also available in a pillow-top model which is softer and better suited to lighter adults and some heavier side-sleepers. So, while you can’t choose a custom firmness on either side of the mattress, the overall design works for a wide range of sleep styles and body types and is excellent for motion isolation.
This is a great mattress from a great company. Avocado is a B Corporation, 1% for the Planet member, and Fair Trade, Climate Neutral certified business. It’s also close to operating the world’s first certified zero-waste mattress factory and has recently switched most of its plastic wrap to paper.
What’s in it?
The Avocado Green hybrid mattress comprises:
- GOTS certified organic cotton encasement
- GOTS certified organic wool flame barrier
- 2-inch comfort layer of Dunlop latex (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft)
- Up to 1,414 individually wrapped 8-inch innerspring coils
- 1-inch base layer of Dunlop latex (D65)
- Wool and cotton bottom layers.
The Avocado Green Pillow-Top is a distinct product rather than just the standard build with an added topper. This attached encasement design features a pocket for an extra 2-inch layer of Dunlop latex (D65).
To keep the mattress together, Avocado uses needle-tufting and steel rings instead of glues or wishful thinking. Most of the materials come from Avocado’s own farms, co-ops, or operations it co-owns. This means superior traceability and integrity of materials.
Certifications include GOTS for wool and cotton, Responsible Wool Standard for wool, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Rainforest Alliance, and Eco Institut for Dunlop latex.
Avocado uses upcycled steel for its tempered coils. The design includes narrower (16-gauge) coils at the edges for full perimeter reinforcement and wide (14-gauge) coils at the shoulders and hips for spinal support. The rest of the mattress is made with 17-gauge coils.
How it performs
Without the pillow-top, the Avocado Green mattress is a great choice for couples who sleep on their backs and want support to prevent sinkage at the hips and shoulders. While medium-firm, this mattress is usually comfortable for average weight or heavier adults who will find it offers good back support and pressure relief.
For lighter adults who don’t sink in as much, or heavier adults who sleep on their side, the standard mattress may prove too firm and not deep enough. Some stomach-sleepers will do just fine with this mattress, but side-sleepers especially will want a softer top and more depth. If you’re a side-sleeping couple of any size, then, consider the Pillow-Top build instead.
Nice things about the Avocado Green include a higher coil count for motion isolation. For restless couples, this can help prevent you and your partner disturbing each other’s sleep. Those extra coils also mean better weight distribution, which reduces stiffness and helps support the spine.
You can use the Avocado Green with any type of bed, including adjustable bases and Murphy beds.
Downsides
The Avocado Green is ready-assembled and comes with or without the pillow-top built in. This means you can’t customize the mattress at home, unless you buy a separate pillow-top from another company.
The signature mattress from Avocado is also only available in one firmness (well, two if you count the pillow-top). This means couples can‘t create a dual firmness design to suit different sleep needs. Technically, you could order two Twin XLs, one with pillow-top and one without, to create a split King. However, your ‘King’ mattress would have a split down the middle and a height difference of an inch.
To get nit-picky, we’d love to see Avocado add a handle on each side. Currently, even the larger sizes only have two handles, while three would make the Queen, King, and Cali-King easier to move.
Packaging and shipping
Avocado is pushing the mattress industry to do better with packaging, having begun using paper wrap in place of most of its plastic wrap for its mattress-in-a-box products. Expect a vacuum seal bag still and cardboard box, but far less plastic overall to try to recycle.
Your mattress is made to order and ships free in the contiguous U.S. It also ships carbon neutral and Avocado offers a white glove delivery service including mattress removal.
Avocado Eco Organic [Staff Tested]

At a glance:
- Pricing: $699 – $1,599 (Queen is $1,299)
- Materials: Organic Fair Trade cotton, organic wool, organic Dunlop latex, upcycled steel coils
- Certifications: GOTS, GOLS, Made Safe, GreenGuard Gold, Climate Neutral certified, FSC, Responsible Wool Standard, Formaldehyde Free (UL), Eco Institut, Fair Trade, 1% for the Planet, B Corporation, Sustainable Furnishings Council
- Sleep Trial: 365-night sleep trial
- Firmness: Gentle-firm (5/10)
- Depth: 10-inch
- Best for: Lighter couples
- Very affordable eco-friendly mattress
- Made with organic latex and recycled steel innersprings
- Good edge support
- Excellent for lighter and younger couples
- Heavily certified, with Made Safe certification as non-toxic
- Made by a sustainable B Corporation
- Lighter than the Avocado Green
- Full one-year sleep trial and 10-year warranty
- More sustainably packaged than most mattresses
- Not enough support for heavier couples
- Lower coil count may mean more motion transfer
- Can’t be flipped over
- Shorter warranty than the Avocado Green
The motion transfer properties are also fantastic, thanks to the combination of latex and the pocketed support system. Gone are the days of waking up early to the jostling when my husband gets out of bed to get ready for work before I do – those precious extra minutes of sleep add up.
Taylor H., LeafScore.com
The Eco Organic is a great budget choice for couples who like a medium firmness mattress with a little bit of bounce but not a lot of motion transfer. You can’t choose a custom or dual firmness with this mattress, but it does come with Avocado’s 365-night sleep trial.
With the price of a Queen just $1,299, you might think the Avocado Eco Organic skimps on the basics. However, this Made Safe mattress is still made by the same sustainable B Corp in its GOTS certified factory using the same quality materials as in the Avocado Green. The big difference is that the Eco has slightly fewer pocket coils and a thinner layer of latex, with no bottom latex layer and a shorter warranty period.
What’s in it?
The Avocado Eco Organic is a latex hybrid made with:
- GOTS certified organic cotton ticking
- GOTS certified organic wool batting
- 2-inch layer of GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex
- 8-inch upcycled steel coil layer (up to 988 double-tempered coils in two gauges: 14.5 at the edge; 12 for the interior)
- Recycled steel rings to keep the mattress layers together
- Organic cotton canvas cover.
The 10-inch mattress uses D65 / 14-19 ILD soft Dunlop latex for the comfort layer.
The mattress is certified non-toxic by Made Safe.
How it performs
There are fewer coils in the Eco Organic than in the Avocado Green and Luxury Bliss. For younger and lighter adults without back or joint issues, chances are this won’t matter much or at all. Avocado still uses smart design to reinforce the edges, and motion transfer is significantly reduced thanks to the pocket coil structure.
At a 5/10 or medium-firm firmness, the Eco is a good compromise for lighter couples with different sleep styles on a tighter budget. Specifically, the Eco is likely to work well for lighter side-sleepers and some back-sleepers. It doesn’t offer zoned support, though, and at 10 inches is too thin for heavier adults over about 200 lb.
We like that the Eco Organic is really breathable, helps regulate temperature, offers a bit of bounce for sex, and is lighter and easier to move around than the Avocado Green and Luxury Bliss. It also has four robust handles, which are lacking on the much higher priced Serenity Spring.
Downsides
The Eco Organic does feel a little less robust than the other hybrid mattresses on our list. It’s still backed by a 10-year warranty though and is made by a well-regarded company.
Expect a touch more motion transfer with the Eco versus the Avocado Green, Luxury Bliss, and Serenity Spring. Note, too, that if you’re a stomach-sleeper, a heavier adult, have chronic pain, or are getting on in years, this mattress is likely going to be too soft and provide too little underlying support.
Packaging and shipping
Your Eco Organic is a mattress-in-a-box and will arrive sealed in plastic and wrapped in paper (saving up to 30 feet of plastic!). Avocado ships carbon-neutral, making it the most sustainable company for shipping.

I normally suffer from back pain but this bed has helped so much. It is perfect for both me and my husband. I am a side and back sleeper while he sleeps on his back and stomach mostly! Our dog also loves it! We love that it is eco friendly as well!
Jessica H., 2021
If you and your partner have similar sleep needs or are lighter adults who like a firmer mattress, the Birch Natural could be the budget choice for you. This latex hybrid mattress is a hit with stomach-sleepers and lighter adult back-sleepers, and will work for some lighter side-sleepers too. Overall, it’s a touch firmer than the Eco Organic and lacks its competitor’s full perimeter reinforcement.
Birch makes the GOTS certified Natural mattress using sustainable materials in its GreenGuard Gold certified facilities.
What’s in it?
The Birch Natural comprises:
- GOTS certified organic cotton cover
- Organic wool comfort layer
- Organic wool flame barrier
- Eco Institut certified Talalay latex
- 8-inch pocket coil layer
- Organic wool batting with organic cotton cover.
Birch uses extra coils to reinforce the two long edges of the Natural mattress.
How it performs
The Birch Natural mattress provides robust core support with comfortable latex on top, so adults don’t sink in too far but get the pressure relief needed for a variety of sleep styles. That said, the medium-firm mattress is best suited to lighter to average weight stomach-sleepers, or lighter back- and side-sleepers up to 130 lb. As such, it makes for a good compromise for many lighter, younger couples.
Other nice features include the responsiveness and slight bounce offered by this mattress versus more plush builds. It’s easy to move around on the Natural and it gives back a little during sex, rather than absorbing energy and making you work twice as hard.
Note that the Birch Natural has reinforcement at the two long edges, which makes it a good choice for couples who like to keep their distance while sleeping.
This is also a very breathable mattress, with airier Talalay latex, innersprings, and wool to help support hot sleepers stay cool.
Downsides
The Natural lacks full perimeter reinforcement, so if you’re looking for a mattress with a firm bottom edge to sit on, this isn’t it. The lack of zoning and 10-inch design also makes the Natural a poor choice for older or heavier adults, especially side-sleepers, who need deeper, targeted support for spinal posture.
Note, too, that the Birch Natural lacks handles. So, even though this mattress is lighter than an all-latex build and the more luxurious Luxury Bliss, it can still be challenging to move.
Packaging
Birch ships the Natural mattress vacuum sealed in two layers of low-density polyethylene, in a cardboard box. You can recycle the cardboard (you don’t need it for a return), and the #4 plastic can be recycled in some places (though not usually through curbside recycling).
For returns, expect to pay a $99 removal fee to have your mattress picked up. The company then tries to donate, recycle, or repurpose any returned mattresses. All Birch Living mattresses are fully recyclable (though, in reality, most mattresses aren’t actually recycled due to a lack of facilities in the U.S.).
Organic Mattresses for Couples FAQs
Nope. It’s true that memory foam isn’t usually bouncy and doesn’t cause much motion transfer but it’s also notoriously hard to move around on. This means it’s tricky to change positions as much as your body needs to stay comfortable and cool.
Memory foam is often a terrible choice for couples because it creates a hot, sweaty, trapped feeling, and stiffness and aching joints in the morning. You might not disturb or be disturbed by your partner overnight but you’ll both wake up grouchy and poorly rested and are less likely to have fun sex on a mattress that is too squishy and unresponsive.
Petite sleepers usually prefer a plusher mattress feel while heavier adults do best with firmer support. This can make it hard – but not impossible! – to find a mattress that works for both sleep partners.
Your best bet is a customizable, dual-firmness design such as the Serenity or Serenity Spring from Savvy Rest, the EOS from Naturepedic, the Botanical Bliss from PlushBeds, or an Obasan mattress.
