The Luxury Bliss is our top top choice for an organic mattress for seniors. This ready-assembled mattress doesn’t require you to unroll and move into place heavy layers of latex and has sturdy handles that make it easier to move to vacuum, change sheets, and so forth.
We love that the Luxury Bliss has a firmer feel – 8/10 – which makes it ideal for most seniors with nerve pain, as well as for larger older adults.
The Luxury Bliss has an impressive coil unit offering robust edge support. This means it’s easier to get in and out of bed and you won’t slide off the side if you like to sit on your mattress edge to put on your shoes or get dressed. It’s also much easier to move around on this mattress compared to softer mattresses, which is a bonus for older adults who spend a lot of time in bed and need to change positions often.
This mattress boasts zoned pocket coils and soft Talalay latex, so you’ll feel comfortable and supported while you sleep. Note, though, that if you’re a senior with bigger hips or shoulders, or if you’re a very light older adult, the the Luxury Bliss may prove too firm for you and could actually lead to back pain. If this is true for you and you’ve already bought the Luxury Bliss, consider adding a soft latex mattress topper for more cushioning and pressure relief.
The Luxury Bliss is ready-assembled, meaning no need to struggle moving latex layers into place.
PlushBeds provides a Lifetime Warranty on the Luxury Bliss, which is entirely organic, non-toxic, and made in the U.S. While this mattress costs more than the Birch or Avocado Green, most seniors will find it’s worth the price for the extra customization options and deeper, firmer support.

Naturepedic’s EOS mattress is a top choice for most adults and is highly customizable thanks to the zippered design. Although you can assemble this mattress at home yourself, Naturepedic offers white glove delivery and set-up, making things much easier for seniors who may struggle to move heavy latex layers into place.
It also has a high coil count, and zoned coils, meaning specific support for the lower back and shoulders. And thanks to that higher coil count, there’s less motion transfer and partner sleep disruption with the EOS.
We like that the Naturepedic EOS offers enough depth for robust spinal support and pressure point relief, thanks to the standard 12-inch design. Add the pillow-top for a 15-inch profile and even greater cushioning and support, especially if you’re a heavier older adult.
You can purchase the EOS in five firmness levels from extra-firm to plush. We recommend a firm build or extra-firm for most seniors, especially for those with sciatica or chronic nerve pain. A firmer build will also be easier to move around on, making it less challenging for seniors to get in and out of bed and stay comfortable if bed-bound for any length of time.
With ongoing customization options, it’s easy to pass on the EOS to friends or family for them to tailor to their sleep needs. The EOS is basically an heirloom mattress, like your cast iron cookware!
Note that the EOS is available in split firmness designs, so older couples can customize the firmness to meet their specific needs.
The EOS is available as a vegan, wool-free mattress, and in a latex-free (all coils) option!

- No split sizes (but can use two Twin XLs for a Split King)
Most seniors will find the Avocado Green mattress in medium-firm very comfortable. Seniors who like a little more cushion, including heavier older adults and side-sleepers, can choose the Pillow-Top Green instead. Both builds are affordable, sustainably made, and carry Made Safe certification as non-toxic.
Avocado is climate negative, a B Corporation, Fair Trade, and a 1% for the Planet member. It will soon have the world’s first certified zero-waste mattress factory and has replaced most of its plastic wrap with recycled paper.
The Green has more individually wrapped pocket coils than most comparable hybrid mattresses, and Avocado varies the gauge and number of the coils at the edges and across five zones. This kind of zoning creates more robust edge support, excellent support for good spinal posture, and ease of movement across the mattress surface. It also means less partner disruption from motion transfer.
The standard Green mattress is medium-firm (7/10) and best for average to heavier seniors (up to 230 lb. or so). For lighter older adults, side-sleepers, or those with wider hips or shoulders, the gentle-firm (5/10) Pillow-Top design may be more comfortable. If you’re an older adult who weighs more than 230 lb., the Avocado Green may not be deep enough for adequate spinal support.
The Avocado Green is ready made (unwrap and watch it decompress in place!) and has convenient, sturdy handles that make it easier to move into place and lift for linen changes and cleaning.

The Savvy Rest Serenity Spring mattress is available with white glove delivery and set-up, so seniors won’t have to struggle moving latex and coil layers into place. It also offers more robust edge support than an all-latex mattress and easier movement across the mattress surface.
The Serenity Spring is a 12-inch latex hybrid mattress, which can be easier to get in and out of than a shallower 8-inch or 9-inch mattress.
For most older adults, we recommend the Savvy Rest Serenity Spring with a firmer coil unit and firmer Talalay or medium Dunlop latex. However, if you’re a lighter older adult, you may find a medium Talalay or softer Dunlop layer works best. Side-sleepers with pronounced hips or shoulders may also prefer a combination of firmer coil unit and softer latex comfort layer.
While we don’t typically recommend home assembly mattresses for seniors, Savvy Rest offers an exceptional white glove delivery and set-up service. And the impressive customization options you get with the Serenity Spring mean you can pass on this mattress to a family member to recustomize at a later date.

The Birch Living Luxe mattress doesn’t require home assembly and has smart zoning and impressive edge support thanks to a hybrid latex and coil design.
The Luxe rates 6/10 for firmness, which makes it less firm than the Luxury Bliss and on a par with the Avocado Green. However, this mattress-in-a-box also features extra layers of wool and cashmere batting, which makes for a slightly firmer sleep surface that allows easier movement across the mattress.
Thanks to extra layers of wool and cashmere, the Luxe Natural supports deeper REM sleep and thermoregulation. It’s a great choice for hot, sweaty sleepers and hot climates!
Overall, the Luxe Natural provides an exceptional balance of pressure relief and underlying core support for proper spinal posture. For older adults with nerve pain, this a great mattress to try out, especially with the 100-night sleep trial and free returns!

The Happsy Organic is a mattress-in-a-box that ships fast and doesn’t require home assembly. It pairs coils and latex but is lighter than the Luxury Bliss, Luxe Natural, and Avocado Green. It doesn’t have handles, though, which can make moving it a little trickier than necessary.
Happsy offers this mattress in just one firm design, though it also offers a Topper for extra cushion. Unlike the Avocado Green Pillow-Top, the Happsy Topper is detachable, making for a more flexible mattress set-up overall.
For average to lighter senior back-sleepers and stomach-sleepers, the Happsy is a great budget buy. If you buy the Happsy Mattress and find it bottoms out or is too firm, though, try adding the Happsy Topper for extra depth and comfort. Both the mattress and topper are returnable.
Happsy’s parent company is Naturepedic, which is how Happsy manages to offer such a fantastic product at such a low price. The newer company makes use of Naturepedic’s supply chains and existing certifications to create a budget mattress with all the right eco-credentials, including Made Safe certification as non-toxic.
Happsy offers a 120-night free trial and free returns. Note that while the Happsy has a zipper, unlike the Serenity Spring and EOS, you can’t switch out layers to adjust the comfort level. The zipper just makes it easier to recycle the mattress at end of life and to assemble it more cheaply in the first place.
FAQs
No! The best kind of mattress for any given senior will depend on their shape, size, and sleep preferences, just as with younger adults. The difference is that many seniors prefer mattresses with more edge support and that are easier to move around on. Many older adults also have chronic pain issues, including osteoarthritis, sciatica, and so forth. This can mean a firmer mattress is best, with enough cushioning on top for pressure point relief, but no so much cushioning that the mattress causes a feeling of being trapped or feels unsupportive.
Older adults who are heavier than average tend to do best with firmer mattresses that have enough depth and core support to properly maintain the body’s natural curves. This helps to avoid strain on the the ligaments and muscles that support the spine and hips.
We recommend at least a medium-firm mattress, if not firmer, and one with at least a 10-inch profile. Ideally, the mattress has dense core support and a softer cushion comfort layer, to balance pressure relief and support for spinal posture.
Heavier and older adults who sleep on a mattress that’s softer than medium or shallower than 10 inches may find the mattress bottoms out. This is where body weight compresses the mattress so much that you can feel the underlying bed base or slats. The result is painful pressure on the hips and shoulders, and an uncomfortable sleep with aching joints on waking.
