Mattress toppers can offer much needed additional support for pressure point relief, especially at shoulders, hips, back, and knees, as well as during recovery from injuries and during pregnancy. They can help you get better quality sleep without having to replace your mattress, meaning you save money and the environment.

PlushBeds offer four types of mattress toppers:
- latex,
- wool,
- memory foam
- down.
Of these, I would only consider the latex and wool toppers to be eco-friendly, so it’s these I’ll focus on in this review. Curious about how we rate products?

PlushBeds offer a Natural Latex Mattress Topper made with Talalay latex that is hand-crafted in the USA and is certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and GreenGuard Gold. Although they don’t offer this explicitly online, they can also make a GOLS certified Dunlop latex mattress topper at your request. To get one of these, you need to place an online order and then contact the company to customize with GOLS Dunlop. I was assured by a company representative that the cost is the same as for the Talalay models, and they do have latex mattress toppers listed on their current GOLS certification.
These mattress toppers are available in Twin, Twing XL, Full, Queen, King, and Cali King and in Soft, Medium, Med-Firm, and Extra-Firm. The king and Cal king sizes have a seam down the middle due to the way they’re made, but this should not affect the soundness of the structure.
You can also add an organic cotton cover to these mattress toppers. So, if you go for the GOLS Dunlop option, this can be a fully organic mattress topper.
The Talalay model has an open-cell airflow design that makes the topper more breathable and helps you stay cool and comfortable. The Dunlop model, presumably, would be a smoother, not open-cell design, given the relative firmness and different kind of processing involved for this organic latex.
These mattress toppers are also a good choice for vegans or anyone with a wool allergy as they are made purely with latex and cotton if you choose the cover.
As a reminder, the GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certification ensures that latex is natural, non-toxic, eco-friendly, and free from dangerous chemicals. It also incorporates labor rights and helps make sure that workers are treated fairly at every stage in a product’s creation, from latex harvesting to finishing touches at the factory.
PlushBeds Handmade Natural Wool Topper
Highlights: A soft mattress topper that’s naturally anti-microbial and made from premium Eco-Wool and organic cotton.
PlushBeds is offering LeafScore readers $100 off their purchase using coupon code LEAF100 at checkout.
Price: $458-$983
PlushBeds Natural Luxury Handmade Wool Topper is made with premium Eco-Wool® and organic cotton, made in the USA, and Greenguard Gold certified. It is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and Cal King.
PlushBeds stick to a strict responsible wool assurance policy, and “encourage all of [their] wool growers to treat their flocks humanely at all points of the wool growing and gathering process.” They state that they don’t use harsh scouring agents, dyes, or chemicals that can lead to reactions in sensitive individuals. They also don’t condone mulesing or the use of pesticide dips.
A wool mattress topper is naturally anti-microbial and is largely resistant to mold, mildew and dust mites. It’s also moisture-wicking and thermoregulating, so it works all year round to hep you stay cool and cozy. Studies also show that sleeping on wool can help lower your heart rate and encourage REM sleep with fewer sleep disturbances.
Every new natural wool topper is made to order by hand, which means it can take up to 14 days after you place your order for your new topper to ship. These wool mattress toppers are not returnable, so make sure to order the right size to fit your mattress. Cancellations are accepted up to 14 days after placing your order (assuming it hasn’t shipped).
Shopping tips
If you’re considering buying a mattress topper, PlushBeds are a good option. The custom order requirement is a major downside.
Personally, if you are going with Plushbeds, I would opt for the certified GOLS Dunlop latex topper with organic cotton, despite the hassle of having to custom order.
If you’re looking for GOTS organic wool and/or cotton mattress toppers, toppers made with GOLS latex that you can order with ease, or mattress toppers made with all three of these eco-friendly materials, Avocado and Savvy Rest are better options based on my research.
