Turmerry’s Wool Mattress Protector is a good choice for a genuinely waterproof mattress protector pad that supports safe sleep and guards against major spills, leaks, and sweat.
Turmerry makes this mattress protector pad using a 270 thread count percale cotton encasement, British Shropshire wool fiber fill, and a thin layer of polyurethane underneath.
What we like
This protector combines the absorbent properties of cotton, the water-resistance of wool, and the breathable waterproofing of polyurethane. The cotton is not certified organic but is certified to Oeko-Tex 100 as free of harmful levels of chemicals.
The mattress protector pad has a fully elasticated perimeter and slips on like a fitted sheet. Unlike more basic mattress protectors, the pad offers some additional cushioning thanks to the wool. But unlike a thicker mattress pad, this one isn’t bulky and is machine washable.
Thanks to the wool, this mattress protector pad is:
- Moisture wicking
- Breathable
- Thermoregulating.
These properties mean you can use the protector pad on any mattress all year round. In winter, this pad will help you stay cozy. In summer, it can help reduce sweating and keep you cool and dry.
Sustainability at Turmerry
Turmerry does not use plastic packaging for its bedding and instead favors reusable, organic cotton bags. For many shipments, it also uses recycled poly bags, biodegradable sealing tapes and reused shipping boxes.
The company operates out of a GOTS and GOLS certified facility, so while this product itself isn’t GOTS certified, many Turmerry products are.
Turmerry avoids using any synthetic materials for this product other than the thin layer of polyurethane. The mattress protector pad is free of:
- Vinyl
- PVC
- Phthalates
- Polyfoam
- SBR
- Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs)
- Formaldehyde
- Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs)
- Toxic flame retardants
- Pesticide treatments/sprays.
The protector is Oeko-Tex certified, meaning it does not contain levels of chemicals like formaldehyde deemed harmful to human health.
Sizing, fit, care and maintenance
Turmerry makes its mattress protectors about 2-inches longer and wider than standard mattresses. This is to allow for some shrinkage on first wash.
Turmerry suggests washing the mattress protector pad in warm water and machine drying it on low heat before first use.
The pad fits mattresses up to 18-inches deep, which means most mattresses and toppers should fit just fine.
Note that this is a mattress protector pad, not just a cover. The padding adds about a quarter inch of height to your bed set-up.
If you have a very deep mattress plus topper and your sheets are already tight, consider getting a thinner organic waterproof mattress protector cover instead of a pad.
Warranty and returns
Turmerry offers an excellent 120-day return window for this mattress protector pad but only if it is unused and unopened.
It’s not super clear if Turmerry offers a 1-year warranty or 10-year warranty on this pad as the product listing and more general warranty information are at odds. I’ve asked Turmerry for clarification but suspect the 1-year warranty is correct. A 10-year warranty on any mattress protector would be asking a lot, especially with regular washing and drying.
Downsides
Although I like the overall design of this mattress protector pad, there are some major downsides.
The biggest thing is that Turmerry doesn’t use certified organic wool or cotton. And while the company’s factory has GOTS certification, the product doesn’t. I would also like to see eco-INSTITUT certification or such for the whole product, rather than just Oeko-Tex 100 certification for the cotton.
Final thoughts
While better than most mattress pads and protectors, this product still uses conventional cotton and non-certified wool, and it’s mostly on trust that we assume Turmerry’s polyurethane is free of the most egregious chemicals and of the same standard as, say, the mattress protectors from Naturepedic (see our review) and Avocado (see our review).
This pad is more water-resistant than Avocado’s cotton pad though and thicker than the Avocado waterproof mattress protector and Turmerry’s own mattress protector. As such, it could be the perfect fit for you if you are looking for an affordable mattress pad and protector combined that adds a little cushioning and genuine waterproof capabilities.
