If it’s been a while since you considered My Green Mattress for a crib mattress, the Emily is worth a second look.
MGM redesigned this crib mattress in December 2018 to feature the GOTS certified coconut coir blended with GOLS certified natural latex. It also got a whole new raft of certifications, which is how it climbed up our rankings for the best eco-friendly, non-toxic crib mattresses.
Out of the box
My Green Mattress makes every Emily Crib Mattress to order. This means you’ll get a freshly made mattress that hasn’t been gathering dust (or mold or mildew) in a warehouse for months on end.
The flip side of every mattress being newly made is that you can expect a slight natural wool or latex smell from the mattress when you first unbox it. This will quickly dissipate though, and won’t be noticeable after a few hours or days. It’s also very different to VOC off-gassing from synthetic foam and isn’t harmful to health.
My Green Mattress only makes eco-friendly non-toxic mattresses, they don’t make synthetics alongside their organic line. This means your mattress is unlikely to have been exposed to hazardous chemicals during production in a mixed-use factory or in storage or transit.
My Green Mattress recommends you flip and rotate your Emily Crib Mattress once a month for the first three months and then every season thereafter to prevent compression.
Design features
The Emily Crib Mattress boasts 150 steel innersprings with a 13.5 gauge with supportive edging. This makes it a little firmer than the Naturepedic innerspring Classic mattress that’s made with 15.5 gauge coils. However, it doesn’t have quite as many coils as the Luxury Avocado Crib Mattress (but is $1000 cheaper!).
My Green Mattress is fairly new to the eco-friendly mattress market, but its founder has a lot of mattress experience elsewhere, which gives the company an edge over other newcomers. That said, Savvy Rest, and Naturepedic have been around for years, and are companies with excellent reputations who offer high-quality eco-friendly mattresses.
The Emily mattress uses coconut and latex insulator pads to create a breathable, non-toxic, durable and firm encasement for the steel springs. This is naturally antibacterial and supports excellent weight distribution for a comfortable and safe sleep.
Downsides
The main downside to the Emily mattress is that it isn’t two-stage. Sure, you can (and should) flip it to use both sides, but both sides have the same firmness and are best suited to infants.
Once your baby is more of a toddler, you may want to switch out this mattress for a softer option. Alternatively, you could add a latex crib mattress topper to extend the use of the Emily into later toddlerhood, before switching to a big-kid bed.
The other main downside to the Emily is that it’s not waterproof. Unlike the Naturepedic crib mattresses, there’s no built-in waterproof layer and seamless edging. Instead, you’ll need to add a puddle pad or waterproof crib mattress cover to protect your Emily crib mattress from the inevitable onslaught of various fluids.
Certifications
My Green Mattress once lacked robust certifications, but the company seriously upped its game and now boasts some of the best eco-certifications in the business. This includes:
- MadeSafe certification as non-toxic
- GOTS and GOLS for organic cotton, coconut coir, and organic latex (and its factory)
- Greenguard Gold certification (for VOCs).
Thanks to the wool layer, the Emily mattress is naturally flame retardant and doesn’t contain any:
- Chemical flame retardants
- Polyurethane foam
- Other petrochemical-derived materials.
My Green Mattress makes the Emily in its GOTS certified factory in Illinois.
My Green Mattress offers a generous 365-night sleep trial for its crib mattresses and a full 10-year warranty for manufacturing defects. In contrast, Avocado offers a 25 year warranty on its similar mattress but only a 100-night or 3-night sleep trial.
If you don’t want to keep the mattress after your 365 nights, My Green Mattress will work with you to donate it to a local charity and then refund your money.
Vs. the competition
All in all, Avocado’s Luxury Organic Crib Mattress (view on Avocado) is your best bet for a no expense spared non-toxic, eco-friendly, high-quality, innerspring mattress. It’s very expensive though, at nearly five times the price of the Emily Crib Mattress and Naturepedic innerspring Classic.
The Emily crib mattress weighs about half as much as the Avocado Organic and Luxury mattresses and is about 4 lb. lighter than the Naturepedic innerspring Classic Crib Mattress (but heavier than the other Naturepedic Classic mattresses).
Unlike Avocado, there’s no indication that My Green Mattress operates a nearly zero-waste factory or uses renewable energy for its operations. It’s also not a B Corporation or 1% for the Planet member and hasn’t yet switched to plastic-free packaging.
Final thoughts
I love the redesign of the Emily crib mattress and how hard My Green Mattress works to achieve and maintain those green credentials.
That said, as a parent trying to balance convenience, budget, safety, and sustainability, my top choice for an eco-friendly, non-toxic crib mattress remains the Naturepedic, given the built-in waterproofing.
If you’re happy to use a puddle pad or other waterproof cover, though, and want a slightly firmer eco-friendly and non-toxic crib mattress with great certifications, the Emily is a top choice.
