Overview
Following on from this success, Huesler worked with Horst Haueisen to develop what has become the “Balancer – Das Original”. This natural bed, made in Canada, entered the U.S. and Canadian market in 2015 and Haueisen and his family, who now own the company, have continued to offer this well-designed, affordable bed system across North and South America.
Swiss Dream Beds source their natural raw materials from carefully vetted suppliers around the world. The wood used in their bed frames is from Quebec, Ontario, and New England; The cotton is grown in Turkey and woven in Switzerland; The latex sap is from rubber trees from Pacific Asia and manufactured in the Netherlands as Vita Talalay, the only Cradle to Cradle Gold certified natural latex; and the wool comes from sheep grazing in the Swiss Alps and is Eco-Institut certified (the certification is for Huesler).
The Swiss Dreams Bed sleep system is a bit more complex than your regular mattress. It can be used with any solid wood bed frame, though, and comprises:
- Natural Talalay Latex strips in certified organic cotton
- Tri-Slat System made with organic Aspen wood and organic cotton ties
- Natural Talalay Latex mattress with certified organic cotton cover
- 100 percent untreated virgin sheep’s wool topper
Swiss Dreams Beds also sell their own organic wooden frame, making it easy to install the whole sleep system at once.
The latex strips form the first component of the sleep system as they enable the Tri-Slat system to be flexible and to conform to the sleeper’s body shape. These are made with 100% natural Aspen wood boards, Talalay latex strips sourced from VitaTalalay, Netherlands, and certified organic cotton covering.
The Tri-Slat system is designed to be flexible so it can adjust to any individual whatever their weight, size or body shape. The Tri-Slats are made of 100 percent natural solid Aspen wood and certified organic cotton rope is used to connect the slats.
Your new natural Talalay latex mattress sits on top of the slat system and works with the slats for a comfortable, supported sleep surface. This mattress offers excellent support, pressure relief, ventilation and a long life. The mattresses have one medium firm side and one firm side, with a neutral layer in the middle, meaning you can flip the mattress to get the level of firmness you need.
The Talalay mattress contains no toxic chemicals, formaldehyde, or synthetics, and there is no off-gassing with this mattress. The open cell structure of latex as well as the pinhole design ensures optimal ventilation and the certified organic cotton cover helps protect the latex mattress and can be removed to be washed.
The 100 percent untreated virgin sheep’s wool topper completes the sleep system. This is naturally fire resistant, helps regulate temperature, is resistant to mold, mildew, and mites, and is made from wool from sheep living in Switzerland.
One downside of buying from a smaller company like Swiss Dreams Beds is that they’re unable to offer much of a trial period. They do have a 21-day return period, but this doesn’t apply to the wool component, presumably because the wool is untreated and cannot be resold. The company relies on its reputation for excellent quality and customer service (they’re very responsive!), however, so you can be confident that if you have an issue, they’ll do their darnedest to help resolve it.
Other nice things about this small company include their commitment to give 10 percent of profits to local charities, and the fact that their beds are so well designed that you don’t need tools to set them up. What’s more, thanks to the smart construction, even the King size bed can be easily transported in any mid-sized vehicle such as a Ford Focus (there’s even a photo on the website!).
A Swiss Dream Bed runs from approximately $2,000 (USD) for a complete twin mattress system with frame up to around $3,000 (USD) for a complete king bed system. This is exclusive of import taxes and shipping, which vary depending on your location. Swiss Dream Bed keep their prices low by only really earning a profit on the bed itself, which is nice.
Swiss Dream Beds vs. OMI, Plush Beds, and My Green Mattress
Swiss Dream Beds might not be a recognizable name for many in the U.S., but this small family company based in Canada has a wealth of experience in the industry, giving them an edge over many other heavily marketed bed-in-a-box companies. Their unique latex, wool, cotton, and flexible slatted bed design is comfortable, high-quality, and cost-effective as well as eco-friendly. What’s more, it will likely set you back less than a mattress from OMI, Obasan, Savvy Rest, Soaring Heart, Naturepedic, and Rawganique.
Plush Beds Natural Bliss mattress (View Price on Plush Beds) and My Green Mattress’s Hope mattress are more budget-friendly options, but if you’re considering these, take a look at Swiss Dream Beds first. Swiss Dream Beds are clearly seriously invested in ensuring your comfort, with testimonials praising the level of customer service from this small company. They’ve been in the bed business for generations, and it shows.
Swiss Dream Beds use ECO-Institut certified wool, Cradle to Cradle Gold certified Vita Talalay latex, GOTS certified cotton, and carry Oeko-Tex Standard 1000 (the more robust standard than the 100), Rainforest Alliance and Sustainable Furnishings Council certification. Not many other companies boast such eco-credentials, making Swiss Dream Beds the nearest rival to OMI in that department.
OMI for MCS
If you have multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) or simply want a high-quality mattress free from toxic chemicals and made with care from sustainably and humanely sourced materials, OMI are still the top choice. These mattresses carry more certifications than Swiss Dream Beds and any other mattresses on the market, have been rigorously tested and found to be durable and high-performance and OMI also created an entire eco-friendly factory to eliminate chemical exposure.
Not for vegans!
If you’d rather not have wool in your mattress, however, neither Swiss Dream Beds nor OMI are for you, and neither are My Green Mattress, Soaring Heart, or Savvy Rest. Instead, Naturepedic offer an all-latex EOS Trilux model that is wool-free and Plush Beds Natural Bliss (all-latex) model is also vegan. Plush Beds is the more affordable option here by far, and likely of the same quality as Naturepedic.
Do Swiss Dream Beds offer a Sleep trial?
The downside of buying from a smaller company like Swiss Dreams Beds is that they’re unable to offer much of a trial period. They do have a 21-day return period, but this doesn’t apply to the wool component, presumably because the wool is untreated and cannot be resold. The company has a solid reputation for excellent quality and customer service, however, so you can be confident that if you have an issue, they’ll do their darnedest to help resolve it.
This puts Swiss Dream Beds in a similar category to Soaring Heart in terms of return policies as the latter company offers a 30-day sleep trial but charges a 30% restocking fee and charges you for shipping and other incidentals if you do decide to return the mattress.
In contrast, My Green Mattress offer a 100-night sleep trial, and a 25-year limited warranty. This is the same as Plush Beds and Avocado, but My Green Mattress also offer a full refund program if you decide you don’t want to keep the mattress after your sleep trial and work with them to donate it to a local charity. My Green Mattress also offer a military discount. OMI offer a 90-day sleep trial and 20-year limited warranty, while Savvy Rest don’t allow returns at all.
Swiss Dream Beds and overall sustainability and ethics
In terms of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), Swiss Dream Beds donate 10% of profits to charity each year, although they’re not clear what that looks like and to whom they donate. Plush Beds have a history of donating to numerous charitable causes and have their own eco scholarship and Savvy Rest also donate to charities and are a certified B Corp. Naturepedic are members of 1% for the Planet, but they don’t seem to do much else, and OMI and Soaring Heart seem to focus all their energy on eco-certifications and have no defined programs for CSR. My Green Mattress also don’t have a lot going on, aside from their military discount and donation of returned mattresses to local charities.
Final thoughts on Swiss Dream Beds Sleep System
All in all, Swiss Dream Beds are a great option if you’re looking for a whole sleep system that offers comfort and support but without the zoned latex or innerspring design. Thanks to the responsive slat system, Swiss Dream Beds set-up will adapt to your needs (such as changing body weight or configuration), all without you having to switch out layers or otherwise lift a finger. This also makes Swiss Dream Beds a fantastic choice for a guestroom where multiple different people make use of a mattress over time.
If your budget stretches to it, though, OMI and Obasan remain top choices for a non-toxic, eco-friendly, high-quality, latex mattress. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, try PlushBeds or Savvy Rest. Be sure to check your mattress needs against the configurations available from these companies, as your particular requirements may be better served by one than the other.
